In memoriam: Brigitte Le Juez (1959–2025)
It is with great sadness that we heard about the passing of Brigitte Le Juez on 30 March 2025. We are grateful to Michael Cronin who penned this homage to the first ADEFFI President.
The French and Francophone Studies community in Ireland mourns the passing of our much loved and esteemed colleague, Brigitte Le Juez. Brigitte was a founding member and first President of the Association des Études Françaises et Francophones d’Irlande (ADEFFI) and was a tireless promoter of the study of French and Comparative Literature at third level in Ireland. She was an inspirational teacher in University College Dublin (UCD) and Dublin City University (DCU) and is remembered with great affection by generations of undergraduate and postgraduate students in both institutions. Brigitte Le Juez was a meticulous scholar and published work of great distinction. Her work reached a wide international audience with the publication of Beckett avant la lettre (2007), later translated into English as Beckett before Beckett (2009), an incisive study of Beckett’s formative teaching experiences in Trinity College Dublin in the early part of the 20th century. Brigitte was unfailingly generous and helpful towards younger colleagues and her legacy of scholarly rigour and personal kindness will be treasured by all.
– Professor Michael Cronin (Trinity College Dublin)
